About the USMCA Certificate of Origin
On July 1, 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) replaced NAFTA as the free trade agreement between the three countries. Under USMCA, qualifying products are exempt from tariffs and quotas when exported to Mexico and Canada. The USMCA Certificate of Origin:
- Can be completed by the exporter, producer or importer. The Certificate of Origin must indicate which party is completing the form.
- Must be in the possession of the importer at the time the declaration is made to customs.
- Can be prepared for a single product on a one-time shipment or for multiple shipments of identical items for a period of up to one year (Blanket Certificate).
