What is a Commercial Invoice?

You’ve received an international order, and your goods are ready for shipping. It’s time to prepare a commercial invoice to include with your shipment. The commercial invoice should include details of the entire export transaction, from start to finish.
The buyer, the freight forwarder, U.S. and foreign customs, the import broker, the marine insurance company, and both your bank and the buyer’s bank will look to the commercial invoice for important instructions. That’s why, if it’s completed improperly, it can cause confusion, delays and disagreements.
A commercial invoice is required by the destination country before clearing goods through customs. It’s also an important supporting document if an insurance claim is filed on a shipment. And it plays an important role in payment: The bank will look at it before releasing funds under a letter of credit.
Remember, a commercial invoice is different from a proforma invoice. A proforma invoice is a quote prepared by the exporter. It resembles a commercial invoice, but they’re not the same!
